Curator's Statement

Eight women creators cast shadows through film, print and experimental media in Obvious Magic: This Womanist Imaginary – the inaugural exhibition at Ashara Ekundayo Gallery. It is our gaze upon the fleshbody, under the scalp and nails that are seen when we kneel in prayer in these works, a display of a type of self-portraiture – an opening in the throats of Black women who store energy, recalibrate, and heal.

Additionally, notions of Deity and danger are explored through inquiry and performative interview that bring forth an understanding of oppression and exaltation. This womanist dialogue at the center of society condemns the removal of spatial understanding and offers wider perception for this current universal shift and return to the Divine feminine.
